Articulatory Vowel Lengthening and Coordination at Phrasal Junctures
نویسنده
چکیده
Recent work has demonstrated that progressively stronger prosodic boundaries result in increasing amounts of lengthening for consonant gestures, both preceding and following the boundary. The present experiment extends these earlier findings by considering kinematic data collected with a magnetometer to determine (1) if vocalic gestures demonstrate lengthening patterns comparable to those of consonantal gestures due to adjacent prosodic boundaries, and (2) if the relative timing of consonant and vowel gestures is affected by adjacent boundaries. A magnetometer system was used to track articulator movements of 3 speakers producing sentences in which a /... C(1)V(1)(#)C(2)V(2).../ sequence was embedded with varying medial boundaries. All subjects demonstrated lengthening of the vocalic articulation before stronger boundaries. Additionally, effects on the relative timing of words spanning a boundary and the relative timing of segments in boundary-adjacent syllables were observed.

The elastic phrase: modeling the dynamics of boundary-adjacent lengthening
This work examines the relation between phrasal structure and the control and coordination of articulation within a dynamical systems model of speech production. In this context, we review how speakers modulate the spatiotemporal organization of articulatory gestures as a function of their phrasal position. We present computational simulations that capture several important qualitative properti...
متن کاملThe coordination of boundary tones and its interaction with prominence
This study investigates the coordination of boundary tones as a function of stress and pitch accent. Boundary tone coordination has not been experimentally investigated previously, and the effect of prominence on this coordination, and whether it is lexical (stress-driven) or phrasal (pitch accent-driven) in nature is unclear. We assess these issues using a variety of syntactic constructions to...
متن کاملEffects of phrasal position and metrical structure on alignment patterns of nuclear pitch accents in German: Acoustics and articulation
In this production study, we investigate the effects of phrasal position and metrical structure on alignment patterns of nuclear rising pitch accents in German. In the acoustic domain, peak alignment varies across open and closed syllables. In the articulatory domain, these effects of metrical structure disappear. The peak shows a stable coordination pattern with the vocalic target of the accen...
متن کاملSome acoustic and articulatory correlates of phrasal stress in Spanish
All spoken languages show rhythmic patterns. Recent work with a number of different languages (English, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and French) suggests that metrically (hierarchically) assigned stress levels of the utterance show strong correlations with the amount of jaw displacement, and corresponding F1 values. This paper examines some articulatory and acoustic correlates of Spanish rhythm;...
متن کاملAdditive Effects of Phrase Boundary on English Accented Vowels
This paper investigates cumulative effects of strengthening and lengthening on English vowels across two prominencebearing prosodic factors, phrasal accent and prosodic phrase boundary. F1, F2 and duration measures are compared across vowels in three prosodic contexts: ip-medial unaccented, ipmedial accented, and ip-final accented. The results show that for most vowels there is only one degree ...
